Tips to Keep Items Safe During a Move

Moving is a stressful time. Not only are you trying to pack up your entire life and start over in a new area, but you also have to take care of the logistics with relocating.

For many people during a move, one of the biggest headaches is how to make sure their items will be safe during the move. A cherished family heirloom that shatters in the back of the truck – or a box that is left behind – can turn an otherwise exciting time into a period of heartache. Here are a few tips to keep your items safe during the move.

1. Write Down What You Own

While it may be impossible to record every single thing that you own, it is still a good idea to make a spreadsheet of your most valuable possessions and list them out. Not only will this provide a checklist to make sure everything has been safely transported, but it also will come in handy for insurance purposes if something is lost or stolen.

2. Safeguard Your Transport

If you’re using one of the moving companies near Orlando, ask about ways that you can make the truck or storage locker secure. Disc locks are more secure than regular locks since they can’t be cut open with bolt cutters, but your local Orlando moving company should provide you with a list of best practices to keep your possessions safe while in their truck.

3. Keep It Quiet

Instead of labeling the boxes as to what’s on the inside, write what room it’s supposed to go to instead, that way would-be thieves have no idea what you’re transporting. Also, be careful not to advertise your move on social media. A relocation always leaves you at least somewhat vulnerable, so minimize your risk by not broadcasting your current status to the world.

4. Transport Valuables Yourself

Depending on how big of a personal vehicle you have, you might want to make sure you keep the things that are most valuable to you close to you at all times instead of cramming them into the back of a truck. Most moving companies near Orlando are experts at packing boxes and keeping things secure during transit, but there’s always the chance for something to fall. If you want to make sure that doesn’t happen, move your most cherished belongings yourself.

5. Utilize Storage Lockers

If you can’t afford to move everything yourself but also are worried about leaving things in the back of a truck, you could always rent a storage locker and set aside your property inside a unit. Ask the Orlando moving company that you use about rates; oftentimes, they’ll have deals with local storage units that can save you a little bit of money on storage fees that you may not be able to get elsewhere. Then, after you’ve successfully moved, you can make a few trips back on your own time to retrieve the items that you left behind.
